Friday, April 26, MES hosted a Club Showcase and an Earthquake Resistant Towers contest. Parents were invited to come and attend this wonderful event. Our personalized learning clubs meet daily. Students are given a choice of which club they would like to attend each nine weeks. We have many clubs such as Cooking, Book Clubs, Pokemon, News and Technology, Games, Spanish, Sign Language, Athletics, History, Legos, Piano, Knitting, and many more. Our clubs are not just interest-based fun times but also integrate subject content and meet many state standards. This is part of how we incorporate the Profile of the SC Graduate and include Personalized Learning for our students. Did you know you could make Square Bubbles? Did you know some of our students can knit? Some parents played games with their children that their child created! Others were given a task card to build something out of Legos. Some of our students played the piano beautifully for their guests. Our Basketball Club presented data that they collected on free throws during their clubs! Pictured below, you can see some of the activities they enjoyed.
In addition to viewing these wonderful games, they were able to witness the Earthquake Resistant Towers Project. Mrs. Rucker was awarded a Lego grant earlier in the year. Students in grades 4 and 5 were able to attend a workshop and compete locally at the STEAM Festival where they won an award for their project. Then, they used all of their learned knowledge and collaboratively worked to build large buildings out of Legos that they thought would withstand an earthquake. During this event last Friday, they tested their towers using an earthquake simulator. Even though all towers withstood the 5 seconds of simulated earthquakes, Judges Mrs. Melissa Cockrell & Mrs. Sulema Wright had specific criteria to judge the towers. The following were the winners of the contest:
First Place: Ms. Anthony’s Class
Second Place: Ms. Allen's & Mrs. Lewis' class
Third Place: Ms. Boyd's
Mrs. Rucker wanted to give shout-outs to our 4th and 5th-grade Earthquake Resistant Towers project participants. She said, "Thank you for collaborating with your teams to produce beautiful towers. Continue to design and create Lego objects. It is a pleasure to have you on my Joy bus. You Rock!"
We love to show off our student work at MES. We are proving to the SC that MES is the Best!
