Literacy Night

MES students shined brightly as they spotlighted their projects inspired by Once Upon A Book to their parents and loved ones. Co-authored by the award-winning authors Grace Lin and Kate Messner, Once Upon a Book follows the main character, Alice, on her adventure to find the place she loves the most. Is it the rainforest, the desert, the ocean, the moon or her very own home- with a supper of Chinese dumplings?

The event, presented in a story stroll fashion, was led by MES Student Council Members and MHS Teacher Cadets. It took participants throughout the school, decorated with themed arches that marked the entry to each area depicted in the story, where the story unfolded and student research projects were displayed. SC Ready standards were used to match each grade level to a story setting. Students researched a topic of their choice based on their grade level’s setting. Project types included newspaper articles, Instagram posts, posters, and sculptures. At each stop students were invited to discuss their projects with their travel group and receive a stamp for their Story Stroll Passport. The tour ended with the students receiving books, a reading buddy, and a fortune cookie!
